Mayan Holidaze 2013

Mayan Holidaze 2013
December 16-20, 2013
Now Sapphire Resort
Puerto Morelos, Mexico - Mayan Riviera

We returned to Now Sapphire in Puerto Morelos, Mexico for 2013 and had yet another Mayan Holidaze for the history books. A little bit of tropical rain tried to put a damper on the first and second daze, but the A+ production team and our relentless party spirit prevailed in the end. With support acts that included Papadosio, Big Gigantic, Cherub, Orchard Lounge and Dr. Fameus, we were poised for a good time from the beginning.

Papadosio made their Holidaze debut and showed us why they are emerging as one of the top jamtronica bands out there. Umphrey’s McGee payed hommage to the Mayan weather twice with both a cover of Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain and inserting "Mexico" into the chorus of Toto's Africa. As awesome as those covers were, UM brought the heat with their own material when they ripped though songs like Wappy Sprayberry, The Linear, and and a jaw-dropping sequence of Der Bluten Kat>Utopian Fir>Der Bluten Kat. STS9 picked up right where they left off the previous year and continued to blow our minds. While locked-in jams like When the Dust Settles, Inspire Strikes Back and Dance were among some of the highlights of their Holidaze shows, perhaps the peak of their sets came when Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic came out on two seperate occassions to jam with them on Grow and Be Nice. Speaking of Big G, the Colorado drum and sax duo were making their second appearance at Holidaze and they did not disappoint! Their two shows, including the one that featured the super-jam with Joel Cummins, Aron Magner, Marc Brownstein, Jon Gutwillig and David Murphy will be instilled in our memories for a long time! Then of course the Disco Biscuits brought it hard for all three of their shows. Songs like Kitchen Mitts, Magellen, Plan B and a Helicopter that arced over the course of two shows reminded us of why we travel to see this music in the first place!

We were also treated to late night and afternoon DJ sets from Orchard Lounge, Cherub, Dr. Fameus, and Mini Man (Marc Brownstein's son.) Cherub even picked up some instruments and played a unique set on the beach to begin the fourth day's music. The music brings it all together, but of course Mayan Holidaze 2013 boasted plenty of activities and excursions including zip-lining with Jon Gutwillig, Tennis with Kris Myers and Jeffree Lerner, and the almost-annual Jake Cinninger Salsa-Off.

Another year, another Holidaze, another 4 days filled with memories and good times with the best of people. Mexico will always hold a piece of our hearts!
